Storing water indefinitely
Wouldnt you be able to store water indefinitely if you did it in glass bottles?

Re: Storing water indefinitely
Thanks for the info guys.
I was thinking more for immediate use. Maybe a couple of dozen liters, I do have a good filtration system, but thought it might be a good idea incase of a situation where there isn't a safe source of water to filtrate. I want some water on hand that I don't have to worry about rotating every 6 months or so. Since glass is silicon I doubt any amount that did dissolve would be far less harmful than any sort of plastic molecules. I was thinking since things like wine can be stored in glass bottles for dozens of years than water should be safe to do so also. What I should have asked was would glass be a better storage medium than plastic. |
Re: Storing water indefinitely
Glass beats plastic as long as it isn't subject to impacts. Stainless steel isn't bad, either. I have no idea what your setup is like but two things I would consider are a cistern or a pond. I have a half acre pond, some of which is below the water table so it won't ever quite get empty, then it is just a matter of filtration and distilling. In addition to storing water it also produces food in the form of fish, turtles, crawdads and water birds. I would still like to have a cistern for general watering needs even though I also have a well. Water is one of those critical ingredients, and you can't filter it if you don't have any.
I have no idea what the longterm health effects of a little disolved silicon might be, but I do know the short term effect of not drinking enough water is death. Somewhere between those two points is a balance. |
Re: Storing water indefinitely
How long will water last in plastic bottles?
Ive had three cases in my closet for 6 months. When should I get new? Thanks Electric-Amish |

I personally have a Big Berkey (with Black Berkey filters on top and the flouride filters on the bottom). I've thrown a Sunshine Mint silver round in the top just for good measure. I HIGHLY recommend having a Berkey on hand for emergencies - it is completely gravity fed, and completely portable. http://berkeywater.com/ We filter all of our drinking water through this, and at all times we have at least 6 gallons on hand. It isn't as much as I would like to have, but it is a start. |

Re: Storing water indefinitely
Maybe you could freeze it? Freezers don't use too much power, and once we're all out of grid power and living in a wasteland, they 2 years the plastic lasts will be long enough anyway. Someone will have killed and ate you by then.

Re: Storing water indefinitely
I have water stored in plastic (only cause I am concerned that glass is too easy to break) but one can only store so much.
This is what I opted for, after a certain amount of research - it may not be best for everyone - but I thought I would share it. I bought two of each. (For the record - I am not associated with this company in any way - merely sharing a good resource I have found!) ON THE WATER PURIFICATION: After much discussion with friends who suggested this company to me, and representatives of the company, the unit that processed the most water fastest with the least amount of pumping was (I picked up one of each for now, and that was roughly $150.00 - I intend to pick up a second next month, I think its smart to have two, in case one breaks or to help friends and neighbors who have no clean water; the drops are in case we lose both units)..........> First Need Deluxe Water Purifier $93.00 Item 618208 Award Winner! Outside magazine says, "The squat and sturdy First Need is the most hygienic on the market, as well as the only water purifier that eliminates viruses without chemicals.
